In addition to bringing back gameplay elements from Tekken 7, like attacks based on the Rage system, director Katsuhiro Harada says that Tekken 8's gameplay will center around "aggressiveness" and feature a new "Heat" gauge system. The Rage Drive has been divided and reworked into a Heat system-based move called Heat Smash, leaving the Rage State as the only one who can use Rage Art again, just like in the Fated Retribution version of Tekken 7.

Play that is aggressive will be rewarded more so than play that is cautious or defensive. The Heat State is comparable to Soul Charge state from Soulcalibur VI in that it grants extra move sets and chip damage in addition to altering the properties of certain characters' move sets, like a heavy guard break. In addition, fighters can dash cancel their designated moves into the Heat State, which is akin to The King of Fighters' MAX Mode. When using a fighter's move set, the Heat State's timer can be stopped.
